On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
