During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
