What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
