The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
