The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
