Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.
However the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
