In excess of 60,000 Flee Sudan's City Following Takeover by Rapid Support Forces Paramilitary Group, United Nations Reports

Displaced people fleeing violence in Sudan
Many are trying to reach the town of Tawila but experience harassment, extortion and mistreatment from fighters along the way

As stated by the United Nations refugee organization, more than 60,000 civilians have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the militia RSF recently.

There have been summary killings and human rights violations as RSF fighters entered the city following an year-and-a-half siege featuring famine and heavy bombardment.

The flow of those escaping the violence towards the town of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had grown in the last several days, according to United Nations refugee agency representative.

They were telling horrendous tales of atrocities, such as rape, and the organization was having trouble to locate adequate housing and supplies for them.

Every child was affected by nutritional deficiencies, she added.

Estimates suggest that over 150,000 individuals are currently trapped in el-Fasher, which had been the army's final stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces has denied broad allegations that the executions in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and follow a trend of the Arab paramilitaries targeting non-Arab communities.

Yet the RSF has arrested one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with summary executions.

The force distributed footage depicting the member's detention following verification that he was involved in the execution of multiple civilians close to el-Fasher.

Video sharing service has verified that it has suspended the profile associated with Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had controlled the profile in his identity.

Sudan was entered a internal conflict in April 2023 following a vicious contest for control began between its army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The conflict has caused a starvation emergency and claims of genocide in the Darfur area.

Over 150,000 persons have died in the war across the country, and roughly 12 million have abandoned their dwellings in what the United Nations has called the most extensive humanitarian emergency.

The seizure of el-Fasher solidifies the regional separation in the country, with the RSF now in command of Sudan's west and a large portion of neighbouring Kordofan to the south, and the military holding the main city, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.

The two warring rivals had been partners - taking over together in a coup in 2021 - but disagreed over an globally supported proposal to move towards democratic governance.
