Heavy Downpours Exacerbate Conditions for Uprooted Residents of Gaza, Agencies Warn
Persistent rains over the last seven days have intensified the already dire circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to humanitarian agencies.
"Horrendous" Conditions Brings Severe Threats
A spokesman characterized the recent storm as "awful", with downpours so heavy that up to 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the streets.
"The recent weather was truly difficult for the families. The downpours were so powerful... And the gusts were so forceful," noted the spokesperson.
Authorities voice extreme concern that minors residing in makeshift shelters in soaked clothing will contract hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Deaths and Widespread Damage
Medical officials have reported that one baby has succumbed from the cold and a minimum of 11 other people have died in building collapses triggered by the harsh conditions.
Further statements suggest a greater death toll. Authorities said that numerous residential buildings had collapsed completely and dozens had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families impacted by rains.
- More than 40 emergency safe spaces inundated.
- Numerous individuals forced to relocate again.
Assistance Distribution Considered Not Enough
Organizations have stepped up distribution of shelter, warm covers and garments after the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid getting in.
"Officials are operating tirelessly to provide that aid and to hand it out, but the scale of the needs is so vast that we are faced with many thousands of people and minors who are really suffering each evening," cautioned one spokesperson.
Future Concerns and Truce Provisions
The second phase of the ceasefire encompasses proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the removal of troops, and other conditions.
Humanitarian groups have underscored the imperative for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to address urgent and future requirements."
The hostilities was triggered by an attack in late 2023. Following military operations have resulted in a significant number of lives lost in the territory, as per medical figures.
