American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised passengers in California to consult carriers about revised departure times.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to stay home on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after 35 days.
