Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Team and Confirms Havertz Setback.
Mikel Arteta remains confident that his squad can persist in handling with player absences after revealing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The Germany international has been sidelined since the summer following knee surgery. Hoped to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”
“Our experience helped us build a team that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” Arteta said.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This development presents a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.
Fitness Doubts Remain
More doubts involve defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the backline for the table-toppers.
The manager is convinced the £250m spend on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a more robust situation to deal with such setbacks.
Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge
Questioned if a larger pool of players was benefiting their championship push, the manager agreed. “Indeed, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the situation with the backline,” he added.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the top. And the case of Mikel Merino.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Havertz
Speaking about the setback highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the required step and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”
He shared his eagerness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, personally, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
“His availability record is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I look forward to see him return involved and playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
