Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
