A Veteran Game Director's Fresh Project That Seems Unfamiliar Yet Builds On The Same Ideas.

Bruce Straley responsible for a legendary franchise is making his return into game development. This inventive adventure, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on the legacy he helped create centered around dynamic AI partners.

A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure

Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. Players control an elderly witch, a protagonist who defies traditional video game heroics. This central concept originated in a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist.

"What if you were without the sword or shield? Perhaps you are physically limited? What if you're an elderly woman?" asked the creative lead. "The concept seemed incredibly compelling to explore the essence of heroism. Being a hero means overcoming challenges, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will."

The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie

Even though the title appears distinct visually, its most significant advancement evolves from of the work pioneered in The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from a central inquiry: "Is it possible to design an AI partner truly living and learning to the player?"

Your strange critter partner that accompanies Gertie isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a toddler which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. Initially, it investigates its surroundings, potentially leading to playful hijinks. Subsequently, it tries to copy what it sees. Ultimately, it observes and assimilates grasping cause and effect.

  • To illustrate: If the creature sees the witch solving a puzzle, it learns the motion absent the context.
  • Subsequently, it may attempt to collect nearby items and test fitting them, mimicking the behavior.
  • Understanding comes when it stumbles upon solving a challenge, teaching through experience.

Where Every Playthrough Differs

Such advanced AI is designed to create a unique story for each player. Straley stresses that the game will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience as opposed to a scripted, action-heavy path.

"Whenever I attempted more hardcore story beats for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The liveliness between these characters is that each individual player will inevitably create different sparks and narrative than I will."

This commitment to organic narrative born from interaction, this upcoming game signifies simultaneously a refinement and a bold new direction from Straley's well-known franchises. The project is presently being built for PC platforms.
