In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series launched last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Although he is called a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking permanent power.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged him to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

• The shortlist included various figures, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• According to an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
